Orienteering is an outdoor adventure sport which is suitable for all ages. A range of courses are usually on offer, making orienteering a sport where the whole family can participate in a physical activity at the same time and place.

Orienteers are classed as Juniors up to and including the whole of the calendar year during which they turn 20 years of age.

There are courses suitable for juniors at almost all NSW orienteering events. The full NSW Event Calendar is available from the main Events page, which also includes links to local events in Sydney and regional NSW and a description of the different types of events.

Training opportunities for juniors are available within each club, at coaching/training days and through the NSW Junior Squad.

Activities specifically for Juniors are listed on the Junior Events and Activities page.

For information on events and orienteering programs for schools, see the Schools page.

Space Racing comes to West Pymble

Thursday, 22 December 2011

38 keen young space racers fronted up to beautiful Bicentennial Park in leafy West Pymble on Tuesday for our first venture beyond the vast open spaces of Sydney Olympic Park.

And what excitement there was, with more than half the kids clearing the course inside the allotted 45 minutes and several reporting seeing a big gum tree crash to the ground inside the swimming pool complex. Luckily the toddler's area was empty as the tree smashed a bench seat in half (the remnants looking rather like the after-effects of a karate chop) as it fell towards the three beginner's pools. We were fortunate it did not topple outwards onto the path leading in and out of control #6 on the gate behind the pool fence. Such precision course setting !

The massive storm the previous night meant the streams were flowing and there was a coolish air as the first of the participants headed off around 10am. Young Garingal prodigy Duncan Currie blitzed the field in 17m14s, more than 10 minutes ahead of second placegetter and younger sister Ellen (28m4s). Liam Morrison was third in 28m49s, just ahead of Big Foot's Sam Rogers. Sam realised upon downloading that he had forgotten to visit control #6 and promptly went back out to bag it, his final finishing time being 30m36s.

It was great to see a few cubs out and about practising their navigational skills. All up there were plenty of first-timers and lots of smiles after they completed the course.  After the relatively easy navigation around SOP, a couple of semi-experienced Space Racers found the intricate detail of West Pymble a bit tough at times and were back a little late or with scores in the mid-100s. All good fun and a great learning experience. A huge thank you to Ross Duker for manning the SI computer and to the coaches/helpers on the day.

Our next Space Racing adventure will launch at Centennial Park on Friday Jan 20. Meet at Lachlan Reserve near the Lily Pond (park on either Parkes Drive or Dickens Drive and look for the Uringa banner). Start times again are 10am-12pm. A map of the park is here to help you  http://www.centennialparklands.com.au/visitor_info/parklands_maps
